Leitrim Observed – A Biography of John McGahern is published and now available to order direct or from bookshops.

This is the first full length biography of one of Ireland’s most loved writers. A man who was able to go from a plain to a heightened prose style with deceptive ease, John McGahern was as scrupulous as he was pure in the manner in which he crafted his books.

Written by Aubrey Malone, author of over 100 books, this book is personal, as he knew McGahern; their lives were similar with their upbringing within the same locality.

They followed the same career in teaching and then writing, they worked in England and America and travelled Europe. 

They lived in the Stoneybatter area of Dublin.

Throughout their lives they met, spoke and from that came a familiar tone of friendship.

Their last conversation was on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, and only two years later McGahern had passed. Malone says, “It was as if a light went out of the world.”
